So far we have seen many attempts to run web applications on the desktop. This time the attempt comes from OpenCandy and it’s called Pokki…and it’s good.
Pokki is nothing more than a framework that allows developers to build applications, using all standard web technologies. The difference with Pokki is that the framework itself is very lightweight, making the applications running with it really fast, plus the support of nicely designed application notifications in the menu bar. To run an application from within Pokki you only need to click once on it and off you go.
Pokki is build on Chromium and comes initially with a set of eight applications including Facebook, Gmail and Twitter among others.
In order to use Pokki, users should get the basic Pokki framework (one installer). The basic apps will come bundled with the initial download. More apps can then be downloaded as needed. Pokki applications are initially supported for Windows, while Mac and Linux support following soon.
This feels almost like using a tablet with all sorts of applications, right from your desktop. This is perfect for a lightweight and fast user experience for your daily routine app usage. We will definitely be using it!
